Geneva – Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip have resulted in the death of a Palestinian child every seven minutes, said Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor in a statement today. The bloody toll is unprecedented in modern history, as no other genocide has been so widely publicised on mainstream Western television programmes and popular social media sites, the oranisation contended, and the number of children killed in Gaza now far exceeds the number of children killed in the entire first year of the ongoing Ukraine war.
Over the course of 24 days of Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling in the Gaza Strip, 3,457 children were confirmed killed by the Geneva-based Euro-Med Monitor, with over 1,000 more reported missing beneath the debris. Based on data from the United Nations, this figure is more than 10 times the number of children killed in the first year of Russia’s war on Ukraine (late February 2022 to late February 2023).
Euro-Med Monitor called for the attention of the international community, which has been acting valiantly at all levels to protect children in Ukraine since February 2022, to the genocide that Gaza civilians—particularly children—are being subjected to. The human rights group urged the international community to cease its egregious double-standard policy by showing support to the children of Gaza in addition to those of Ukraine.
In the midst of a terrifying genocide, children in Gaza are often the targets of random attacks intended to kill with premeditation, Euro-Med Monitor emphasised. Many of these children are also homeless, said the organisation, without access to food or clean water, or were forced to flee under fire to the southern part of the Gaza Strip, which has exacerbated the traumas they suffer.
Children under the age of 18, who make up 47% of the 2.3 million people living in the Gaza Strip, have long had mental health issues, stated Euro-Med Monitor.
